Mauricio Granados, age 71 of Sterling died Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Mauricio was born July 19, 1941 in El Salvador, the son of Domingo and Maria Granados. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling. Mauricio worked as a laborer at Gate City Steel for more than 30 years after retiring in 2001. He first married Matilde Carrillo-Melendez in 1964 in Chicago, she died September 4, 1986. Mauricio then married Evangelina Barajas on December 29, 1990 in Sterling, she died July 11, 2012.

Survivors include from his first marriage one step-daughter; Mary Harrison-Outlaw from Snohomish, WA, and two step-sons; Rudy Melendez of Rodeo, CA, and Mario Melendez of Sterling, and from his second marriage one step-daughter; Jeannette Barajas of Sterling, and one step-son; Richard Barajas of Sterling, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Domingo and Maria Granados, both spouses, one daughter in infancy; Lisa Rae Granados, three brothers; Armando Granados, Rigoberto Granados, and Unfredo Granados, and one sister; Elvira Andrade.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30AM on Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at the church with Reverend Juan Ayala officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory.
