John Charles Collins, 87, a longtime resident of Berea passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Bradley Bay Health Center, Bay Village following a lengthy illness. He was born August 30, 1925 in Barnard, Missouri and graduated as valedictorian from Fortescue High School, Fortescue, Missouri. He joined the Merchant Marine and later enlisted in the Army as a medic during World War II. He was a former owner of the Kenilworth Tavern, Lakewood; a former owner of the Oak Park Nursing Home, Oakwood Village; and retired as a self-employed commercial real estate broker from Collins Investment. He played the fiddle and mandolin and was a member of Mud in Your Eye, a local band which played traditional American and Irish folk music. John also was an avid reader.
Mr. Collins is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene Marie (nee Washeruk); six children, Jean, Marc, Colleen, Renee, Terry and Gail; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the eldest of nine children and preceded in death by his parents, Maynard Elsworth Collins and Winifred Collins (nee Clark).
