George M. Vrabel, Sr., age 84, of Vermilion and formerly of Lorain, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain, following a brief illness.
Born on July 24, 1928 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania to the late John and Anna (nee Kotailk) Vrabel, he attended high school and college in Pennsylvania. When he first came to Ohio, he resided in Sandusky for a few years and then moved to Lorain, where he lived for many years. For the last 20 years, George made Vermilion his home.
He served in the US Army during World War II.
George was a licensed pharmacist, and worked in the pharmacy at Gray Drug in Lorain, which later became known as Rite Aide. He also was the store manager of Gray Drug. He retired at the age of 65.
He was a member of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain, and the Amvets Post 22.
George enjoyed fishing and golfing.
He is survived by his wife of Deborah (nee Morris); his son, George Jr, (Nicola), of Monroe, Louisiana; his daughters, Cheryl Lynn Vrabel, of Amherst, Regina (Greg) Keller, of St. Petersburg, FL, Tracy (Lorenzo) Tellez, of Austin, TX, Valerie Hellinger (Dave Bichsel), of Amherst and Stephanie (Jeff) Nickoloff, of Amherst; 7 grandchildren and his brother, Albert, of Wilkes Barre, PA.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Vrabel; his brothers, John, Joseph and Andy; and his sisters, Veronica, Margaret, Pauline, Ann and Mary.
The Vrabel Family will receive friends today, Tuesday, November 27th , from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst, where closing prayers will be on Wednesday, November 28 at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Rev. Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Full military honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard.
