Donna M. Grovenburg, age 76, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.

A celebration of her life will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013, in the Carmen Center of the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell with Pastor Keith Morrison, Grinnell Regional Hospice chaplain, officiating. Interment will be in Rock Creek Cemetery west of Grinnell.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Her family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be designated in her name to the Mayflower Community Human Needs Fund, 616 Broad Street, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with her family at

Donna was born on November 4, 1936, in Laurel, Iowa to Donald and Hattie Mae (Benskin) Kinnaird. She was raised in Searsboro and graduated from Searsboro High School in 1954.

She honorably served as a Corporal in the United States Women's Army Corp during peacetime. She was a basketball standout for Army and was voted most valuable player in 1957. She was united in marriage with Lloyd "Butch" Keith Grovenburg on June 21, 1958, at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. The couple was blessed with two children, Larry and Tammy. The couple raised their family in Grinnell and Donna worked at Maytag in Newton for 25 years, retiring in March of 1998. She was a member of the Local 997 United Auto Workers for 25 years.

Donna dearly loved her family and was blessed with her first grandchild, Dezarae, on February 11, 2001. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing delicious feasts for her family during the holidays. She enjoyed taking care of her flowers, rosebushes and houseplants. Her other enjoyments were watching QVC and the Food Network on television, playing games on Pogo, making afghans and crocheting.

Donna is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd "Butch" Grovenburg of Grinnell; her son, Larry (Lori) Grovenburg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her daughter, Tammy (Dennis) Britson of Gladbrook, Iowa; a granddaughter, Dezarae Grovenburg of Sioux Falls; and her siblings, Wayne (Mertie) Kinnaird of Dubuque, Illinois, Wendall (Jean) Kinnaird of Grinnell, Earl (Pam) Kinnaird of Grinnell, Bill (Shirley) Kinnaird of Grimes, Iowa, Judy (Roger) McCulley of Grinnell, Joan (Roger) Moyer of Grinnell, and Jerry (Pat) Kinnaird of Salina, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
