Aubrey Cormany, 72, of Charleston departed his bodily vessel on January 23 at Hubbard Hospice House after a 20 month battle with cancer.
Aubrey was born to parents, Roscoe and Bessie Cormany on December 24, 1940. He grew up in a small home with his parents and grandparents in Malden, WV. Given that he lived adjacent to the Malden Methodist church, Aubrey developed a strong faith in his early years which continued throughout his life. In his youth, Aubrey was a boy scout and a pool lifeguard.
Aubrey graduated from DuPont High School in 1958. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Marshall University in 1962 and passed the Certified Public Accounting examination on his first attempt. Aubrey was employed as Assistant Comptroller for Raven's Metal Products in Parkersburg immediately after college. Two years later, he joined Richard Herman in his accounting practice in Charleston. The accounting firm of Herman & Cormany was born shortly thereafter.
Aubrey spent nearly 50 years as a partner at Herman & Cormany. He was an expert at solving some of the most complex financial problems faced by consumers and businesses throughout the state of West Virginia. Aubrey's extraordinary devotion to his work and clients was unparalleled.
In 1968, son, Jon Kristofer Cormany was born to Aubrey and his first wife, Ernestine Monday Kessel. Aubrey was a doting father and husband. He and his son spent many years playing football, basketball, golfing and fishing. Aubrey and Kris were great professional colleagues and best friends.
In 1991, Aubrey married Maria Wentz Cormany who worked closely with him and his clients at Herman & Cormany. They spent many happy years together and enjoyed fishing, skiing, and relaxing at their mountain home in Canaan Valley. They loved entertaining with Kris, his wife, Karen and grandchildren, Mason Aubrey and Marissa Mae. Mason and Aubrey shared a tremendous bond and both exuded a quiet understanding of one another. They spent many days exploring the outdoors but were most content simply holding hands and talking. Marissa loved sleepovers at her grandparents' house and testing whether Aubrey could maintain his stoic character.
Aubrey was a 2nd Lieutenant in the West Virginia National Guard and served as Company Commander of the Richwood unit. He was past president of the WV Board of Accountancy, a board member and treasurer of Trout Unlimited and was active for many years in Kiwanis International. Aubrey was a faithful member of the Men's Prayer Group at Bible Center Church.
The family is grateful that Aubrey was at peace throughout his final days. He knew he was departing for a better place.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Care 1606 Kanawha Blvd, Charleston, WV 25387 or Bible Center Church 1111 Oakhurst Drive, Charleston, WV 25314.
A celebration of Aubrey's life will be held at 1pm, Saturday, January 26 at Bible Center Church, 100 Bible Center Drive [South Ridge Campus], Charleston with Pastor Bill Tanzey officiating. A visitation will be held from 11am to 1pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Spring Hill Cemetery.
