Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

Helen Gabor Solomon, 99 of Bay Village, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late John Solomon; loving mother of John Jr. (Becky), Jim (Jocelyn), Trish Kosik (Bob); devoted grandmother of Joe, Jennifer (Matt), Jeffrey (Winnie), Maria, Kelton, Kayley & Tyler; and great grandmother of Ethan, Joey, Gabriel, Charlie and Cecilia.

Helen retired in 1981 from Bay High School as Secretary Treasurer. Her retirement years didn't slow her down, as she dedicated herself to serving others for decades to follow. After retirement, she volunteered for 25 years at St. John Westshore Hospital as a Pharmacy Aid, delivering medicines to the hospital floors. She was active in Bay Women's Club and volunteered at the Dwyer Center, delivering Meals on Wheels. But for Helen, her church and family were the centerpieces of her life. She served in many capacities at Bay Presbyterian Church throughout the years, watching it grow. She was recently honored for her 64 years of membership and service at BPC.

Helen was also a world traveler, globe trotting throughout Europe and the Middle East. One of her most memorable trips was to the Holy Lands with a group from Bay Presbyterian Church. This trip strengthened her faith and forged deep friendships among those who shared the journey. Helen was bilingual in Romanian and English, and she was chosen to accompany newsman Peter Jennings to Romania were she interpreted for him and others from the State Department at an International Technology Fair in Bucharest,.

Helen's most important role was to her family, where she was a loving wife and mother, and grandmother to her cherished grandchildren. Her impact on their lives was determined by simple, loving touches: her home always was open with toys in the garage, art supplies in the basement, and snacks in the shoebox up in the cupboard. She adored them all, relishing in their achievements and praying for them every day. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family.

Many words and phrases describe Helen, including feisty, independent, and strong willed. She was also compassionate, loyal, optimistic, wise, and had fierce integrity. She was a good and faithful friend, teacher, and mentor; engaging storyteller and servant of God. She was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve for their support during the last few months of Helen's life. A special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Independence Village Avon Lake, where she made her home for the last 9 years.

Helen's Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bay Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 11:00am. A luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Helen's name to Bay Presbyterian Church, 25415 Lake Road, Bay Village, OH 44140.
