Obituary

Harry A. Orris, age 71, passed away June 13, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Aug. 24, 1945, to Dolores Orris (nee Lindberg) and the late Harold Randa. Dear brother and uncle of many; cherished friend to countless others. Harry grew up in Painesville and graduated from Ohio State University, working as a Kroger cashier to put himself through school. He taught Spanish and French in the Berea and Orange school districts before embarking on a 35-year career with the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education. He started in 1974 as an investigator and retired in 2009 as director of the Cleveland office, where he vigorously upheld the mission to ensure equal access to education for all. In 1979, he received his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. As noteworthy as his many achievements are, his true legacy is his love of people and his boundless joy at being alive. He could converse with anyone, even strangers, because he was interested in everything. He traveled the world; enjoyed the arts, especially music and theater; was always in motion, playing tennis, skiing, boating or working out; cooked like an angel; and concocted killer cosmopolitans, as those who attended the summer picnics he organized at Porthouse Theater can attest. Most of all, Harry thrived on bringing people together. In that spirit, those who loved him will gather to remember and to celebrate his life at 5 pm. Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Cleveland Yachting Club, 200 Yacht Club Dr., Rocky River. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Evergreen Cemetery, 501 E. Main St., Painesville, OH 44077, Fr. Peter Mihalic officiating. A gathering will be held following service from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Elks Club, 723 Liberty St., Painesville. Contributions in Harry's memory may be made to the Cleveland Play House, 1901 E. 13 St., Suite 200, Cleveland, OH 44114 or the Cleveland Foundation, 1422 Euclid Ave., Suite 1300, Cleveland, OH 44115.
