Raymond Cassidy Rumel, passed away Friday, February 15th, surrounded by his family and after battling Parkinson's for many years. He was 85.

Ray was born on January 20, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the third child of John Henry and Winifred Mary Rumel. He attended school in Salt Lake and played both football and the violin for West High School. Ray had a mischievous sense of humor, once mimicking the trademark signal of a Salt Lake City mob leader by tossing his jacket over his shoulder while leaving church in front of the gangster himself -- much to Ray's siblings' dismay.

Ray joined the service near the end of World War II and was stationed on the West Coast. Ray was proud of his service in the Navy, although he was fond of noting that he never learned how to swim. After receiving his honorable discharge from the service, Ray attended college and worked in Idaho. He met Gloria Humphries in the early-1950s and they soon married. That union lasted for over sixty (60) years.

With two young children in tow, Ray and Gloria moved to Southern California in 1953. Ray found work with the Thrifty Drug Store Company in 1954, initially serving as a manager of its stores in Riverside and Arlington and holding several other management positions with the company. Ray and Gloria eventually settled in Hacienda Heights in the early 1960s, residing there to the present day. Ray retired from his position as Vice-President in charge of store operations for Thrifty's in 1985, having worked for them for thirty-one (31) years.

Prior to his retirement, Ray, Gloria and their children spent two weeks every Summer on vacation, camping in their trailer, visiting or meeting up with relatives in the Sierras (Virginia Lakes was a favorite destination) and Utah and Idaho, and competing and swapping lies with family friend Chuck for the "Who Caught the Biggest Fish?" award. During retirement, Ray and Gloria traveled extensively in their motor home, often joined by friends Loren and Jackie. Trips to Alaska and Mexico were particularly memorable.

Ray spent his final years at Monaco Crest Guest Home in Hacienda Heights. While there, he received expert and loving care from Monaco's staff -- most notably from his caregiver and friend Ben.

Ray is survived by his wife Gloria, his daughters Cheryl Taylor and Debbie Rumel, both from Cucamonga, his son John Rumel (Kathe Alters), Boise, Idaho, his sister Colleen Lummis, Sunnyvale, California, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Fae Nelson, Salt Lake City, Utah and Helen Tuley, Los Alamitos, California.

Graypa, I love you so much! I miss you, you were an awesome great granfather. The last memory I have with you and I will always remember for the rest of my life was about 2 weeks ago, and grandma Mel told you that my brother, sister, and I were all gorgeous children and responded by saying "yes they are" my heart gave me this wonderful feeling, that was the last time I heard your heartwarming voice. I love you so much!! <3>

I already miss you!! I will never forget all the memories I have with you and grandma. I loved to bug you and talk to you while you were watching sports and wanted nothing to do with our conversation! I loved everything from going on our meals on wheels runs in your jeep to having a Super Bowl poker party. I have only best memories of you and I'm glad all my kids got to know you and will remover in their hearts that their graypa was a great man! I love you and will always miss you! Xoxo

Dear Aunt Gloria, Aunt Colleen and family,

Please know that my heart grieves with you and your families at this time.

I will always remember Uncle Ray's zest for life and his wonderful sense of humor. My last memory of Uncle Ray is our Las Vegas trip together right before my mom passed away. What fun we had reminiscing, laughing, and of course eating at some wonderful restaurants, which has always been a favorite event for our family.

One special memory of my Grandpa was when we went to go visit him at Monaco Crest and Nathan would say "Papa Ray its Nathan Ray" and Grandpa would get a big smile. Nathan would say "Papa Ray , I love you". Grandpa would be drinking root beer and always get some for Nathan and drink it outside and watch Nathan run all over the place. Grandpa would say "Can I have some of that energy?" My two boys didn't get to spend much time with you but the time they had was special. We love you Grandpa/Papa!

Aunt Gloria and Uncle Ray were not only my Mother and my Father's Sister and Brother-in-Law they were two of their best friends.

Whenever we went to visit Aunt Gloria and Uncle Ray, Uncle Ray would show us the latest movie that he had taken with his camera of their family.... he could not resist starting from the beginning.

One night when he called to invite us over, he told us that we were going to do something different...

It was different!.... We watched the movie out doors....HAHAHA

We will miss Uncle Ray's love and humor.....Love, Vicky

We all met Ray at Monaco Guest Home about 4 years ago. My mom Teresa joined him and others at Monaco Crest. Ray was the most kind, loving and what a sense of humor. As we got to know him more, he would always assure me that he would keep an eye on my mom. And he did. Always telling me he would talk to her and ask her to sing. We loved Ray, knowing that while he was being looked after, he was looking after someone else. He will be cherished in our Hearts and be truly missed. We love you Ray.

There are so many stories that come to mind; Uncle Ray I am going to miss you, your humor and the way you were there for family. I think we all remember our trip to Fish Lake and the incident at the Lodge:) After all these years I still break out in a smile. What I remember most though is how much Dad enjoyd your visits after he had his stroke and the last time you came to Salt Lake, Mom was put in Intensive Care and that day you got in your car and drove all the way to Salt Lake for your sister... Thank you and we will miss your smile, your humor and your love.

Raymond was the first cousin of my grandfather Kenneth Rumel. Ray was the last of his generation in our Rumel family and the eldest of our family.

I'd loved to have known him and been able to talk with him about his Rumel ancestors. I'm sure he possessed many of the traits of the Rumel heritage, namely honesty, problem solving, organizational thinking and personal fortitude.

To his family my wish is that time will heal and the love of your father sweeten your memories.

Would like to clarify that Raymond was the fourth cousin of my grandfather Kenneth L. Rumel both descendants of John Henry Rumel sr. of Pennsylvania who came to Utah in 1849.
