Dorothy Lanelle Birdsong "Dottie", age 93, of Temple Terrace, FL, passed away on Tuesday, 1/29/2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on 6/6/1919 in Norfield, MS to her parents, William Welch and Buelah Smith. She was the youngest of 9 children. Dottie grew up in a Masonic Children's Home in Meridian, MS. She married Charles William Birdsong, Sr. in Mississippi in 1938. They had 3 children. Prior to moving to Temple Terrace, she was a resident of Mt. Gilead, OH. When Dottie was 8 years old, she met Charles Lindbergh and he inspired her to learn to fly, she obtained her pilot's license at the age of 40 and by the time she was 70 she had logged over 9,000 flight hours. In her aviation days, she enjoyed competing in the annual Powder Puff and Angel Derby races. Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace, a longtime member of Krewe of Venus, and a member of the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club since the 1960's. She served 3 years on the Aviation Women's Advisory Committee and also served as a Florida Delegate for the Republican Party in 1984 during President Reagan's second term. Dorothy met four sitting presidents. She was active in both the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts and she enjoyed golfing and bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles and son, Roger. She is survived by her children, Charles "Buddy" Birdsong, Jr. (Pam) and Jane Summerall (Jim); daughter-in-law, Margie Birdsong; grandchildren, Terry Birdsong (Trish), Brad Birdsong (Stephanie), Tammy Willman (Chris), Lesa Ann Summerall, Jennifer Sawyer (Jonathan), Kimberly Powell (Brian), Denny Birdsong and Christie Cannon (Rick) as well as 13 great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service for Dottie at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 02/05/2013 at First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace. Our lives were enriched from knowing Miss Dotttie. She always was there to help when the youth needed anything from someone in the kitchen to a home for someone to stay. She showed us what a Cjhristian Ladie should be. I will miss her hugs and the "I love you" every Sunday more than I can express.

I've just learned of my Aunt Dot's passing. I loved her so much and always looked forward to her Christmas letters. Although I haven't kept in touch like I should have, I treasure memories of Aunt Dot, Uncle Charles, and all my cousins.My parents loved all of you so much and I'm rejoicing knowing that my mom and dad are now reunited with their beloved brother and sister-in-law and Roger. The Birdsongs are together again! My love to you Buddy and Janie and all of your families.

My family loved Dottie very much. She touched so many people in so many different ways. Enjoying an evening at the country club will never be the same with out her. She cared so deeply for everyone that she met. She would always ask me, "How is your pretty wife and where are the boys?" We will miss you Dottie. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and for anyone else who was touched by this truly wonderful and special woman.

Have many,but remember looking through binoculars out our front picture window at the boys track practice across the street from our house and trying to find my boyfriend, and Mom pops into view trying to help several boys get their timing and stride down as they were coming out of the blocks and preparing to jump the first hurdle. She had noticed they were coming up too fast,and and breaking their stride and timing. She was on the track and basketball team of her school in Meridian and was quite an athlete. She also was jumping the hurdles that day to show them how it's done. I was mortified at the time, but the guys thought she was great. She received an honorary coach certificate at the end of the season. She also drove groups to all the away track meets.

Dotie traveled with us on my trips to Dinner Shows, and to Las Vegas. Always a JOY to be around!! We Shared many of her stories, her
life experiences, many laughts, and a few wines as
we shared these wonderful times together, as well as the many "WONDERFUL VISITS" with her over the years at Temple Terrace Golf Club.

Dottie and Charles were best friends of my mom and dad, when my father was a new minister at Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Dad was young and so full of energy; you can bet who were the greatest supporters of my folks in the church Definitely the Birdsongs. Charles made sure my dad always had a new car to drive -- and so many dinners at their big house. They took my 16 year old sister on a trip through the South, and Linda loved the trip and the Birdsong family. Through all the years, Dottie has written our family Christmas cards and letters.
