I wish there was a video or at least an audio recording of Mary in speech class at Dothan High, practicing, reciting and delivering with incredible articulation and passion her reading of the "Marry Lou WIngate" passage from Benet's "John Brown's Body" about the belle who was "as hard to break as a rapier's blade". Read it and remember her voice, intelligence and light. So very sad to hear of her passing.

As a native of Dothan, Alabama, I have many memories of the Flowers family and particularly Flowers Hospital. I did not know Mary, but I extend my condolences to the family.

Mary was such a beautiful, smart and funny friend. We wrapped Christmas presents one Christmas at Claudine's and she made it so much fun. She will be missed and everyone is a better person to have known someone like Mary. May God bless your family. Mimi Whatley Smith

We received the news about Mary just a day ago and are so very saddened by your untimely loss.

Mary's life in Knoxville, of obvious commitment to faith, family, and community, has set a "top drawer" life-example for everyone to follow in our own communities...

Dwight and family,

I was notified of Mary's passing by my sister who lives in Knoxville. Mary was my roommate in college, and I absolutely adored her. She was such a gracious young lady, and I truly looked up to her. She was a good friend and I've thought about her so many times in recent years. Although it has been about 36 years ago, I still feel and know her presence and the truly wonderful effect she had on me.
